The Mool mantra

October 28, 2017

Today I wanted to share with you this mantra, the Mool Mantra, that I like a lot. Whenever I hear it, something happens. I find it very grounding. I imagine myself walking with a determined step, connected with the earth, on my path. It’s always the same image that comes to mind. This rhythm and vibration are really different from other mantras and I find them very inspiring.

I started discovering yoga Kundalini, according to Yogi Bahaman’s teachings, and I noticed that this mantra was often used in this practice, so I wanted to learn a little more about what it represents…

The Mul Mantra, or also Mool Mantra, means “root mantra” and was transmitted by Guru Nanak, yogi, healer and founder of Sikhism, after he reached enlightenment and began to write The Guru Granth Sahib which is the holy book of the Sikhs. The Mool Mantra is the equivalent of Gayatri Mantra in Hinduism and Om Mani Padme Hum in Buddhism.

The original version of the mantra

The most common version

Ik Ong Kār Sat Nām Kartā Purkh Nirbhao Nirvair Akāl Mūrat Ajūnī Saibhang Gurprasād

The English translation

One Creator. Truth is His name. Doer of everything. Fearless, Revengeless, Undying, Unborn, Self illumined, The Guru’s gift, Meditate! True in the beginning. True through all the ages. True even now. Oh Nanak it is forever true.

You can listen to it on Spotify here or directly below. These are my favorite versions :)!

Enjoy!
