Salt Therapy aka Halotherapy – Bali Better Breathing, Ubud

February 27, 2018

“Salt is born of the purest parents, the sun and the Sea” – Pythagoras –

A friend advised me to go visit Bali Better Breathing while I was in Ubud to enjoy a salt therapy session. I had no idea what it was about, but of course, I was intrigued and I went there. I knew very little about salt in general, I just had in mind that Himalayan salt is full of minerals and very good for health and that epsom salt used in bath is amazing for aura and energy cleansing and healing rheumatism and injuries… That was it!

What is Salt Therapy?

I learned much more about salt as a therapy. First the name for salt therapy is halotherapy. It is an excellent treatment for respiratory conditions. Halotherapy is natural, effective and safe and helps treat various disease as well as enhances a good respiratory hygiene and wellness, improving conditions of the lungs and skin.

How does it work?

The whole room is filled with salt, on the floor, on the walls there is natural local salt and there are also himalayan salt lamps around the room, in order to recreate that salt cavern atmosphere but the real treatment comes from halogenerators. Indeed, we can’t breath himalayan salt. We can consume it in food etc. but it has too many minerals to be absorbed by breathing and it would stay on the airways. Consequently to this, the salt used in halo generators is a therapeutic pharmaceutical salt.

Why doing halotherapy?

Each person has a different expectation of halotherapy. It can be done to improve:

  • Spirituality
  • Energy
  • Relaxation
  • Sleep
  • Creativity
  • Health (in case of flu or cough, smoke, pollution etc.)

The benefits?

Salt is an exceptional antibacterial produce of nature. This method allows to clear inflammation and airways. Indeed, when the airways are inflamed, they become narrow and create more mucus. Salt will help open the airways and clear the mucus, as well as cleanse the lungs of bacteria, irritants and pollution, and reduce inflammation of the respiratory tract.

Breathing is the life of the body!

Breathing helps oxygenate all the organs of the body, so having a general good health is closely linked to our breathing hygiene.

In general it will help:

  • Make your breathing easier after just a few sessions
  • Reduce the need for inhalers and antibiotics
  • Improve lung function
  • Alleviate sneezing, coughing, and shortness of breath
  • Prevent and treat respiratory tract disease
  • Improve general health and quality of life
  • Reduce snoring
  • Strengthen immune system
  • Enhance sport performance for professionals
  • Improve dermatological disorders (acne, dermatitis, psoriasis)
  • Improve sleep
  • Clear mucus and sticky phlegm on lungs

How many times?

Here are a few average numbers:

  • For respiratory disorders – 10 to 20 daily sessions
  • For skin disorders – 8 to 15 daily sessions
  • For lung cleansing, strengthening of the immune system and general well-being – 2 sessions a week over 3-4 week period
  • Repeat 1-3 times a year.

For children, the sessions are up to 30 min and for adults up to 40-60 min.

Like most practice it’s an intuitive method. The best is to tune-in with your body and feel what seems right for you. Like Made, the manager would say…

“Read your own body, you are the doctor”

My experience

I loved it!! I went twice there and each time I have been welcomed so warmly by Ulan and Made. They are the sweetest team! Answering all my questions, and accompanying me in this new experience.

Ulan took me to the salt room and installed me in my chair, placing then the blanket all over me to keep me warm, indeed the temperature of the room is quite low. She then explained to me how the session was going to unfold and left me quietly in the salt room, with that soft and soothing music, shutting the lights down, leaving only the smooth light of the himalayan salt lamps.

It was a divine moment that I spent there. Feeling so relaxed and drifting from one sleepy state to a more conscious state in a very smooth flow. It’s a very meditative experience and I did feel some detoxification taking place with only 2 sessions. It definitely is one of the practices I would keep on doing.

With love, x
