Craniosacral Biodynamic Therapy – Ageliki Papadopoulou

I met Ageliki while I was in Pai, in Northern Thailand. I found her ad, in a super nice café (as there are many in Pai), on an advertising table where different therapies were promoted. Hers caught my eye and since I had never heard about Craniosacral Biodynamic therapy I contacted Ageliki and we agreed on an appointment to discuss and experience that technique.

Ageliki has a very calm, grounded energy and is an amazing listener. The experience I had with her was very soothing and enabled me to connect with my body with a much smoother approach than anything I had experienced so far. You can read about my experience with Ageliki here.

How did you discover Craniosacral Biodynamic Therapy?

When I was to go to Thailand for the first time in 2013 to study Thai Massage, a girl I knew from Greece had told me I should definitely take a course with Rosemary Wallace who was teaching in Chiang Mai. She didn’t tell me exactly what it was about but that the course was a “must” and it kind of stayed with me. I never took the course but when I was back in Greece in 2014 volunteering at the Sunshine House for the summer season, Rosemary Wallace came to teach Integrated Craniosacral Biodynamics 1. I just knew I had to take it now and signed up to be a student for the course, having to borrow money to do so. It was the best thing I ever did, it changed my life completely. Throughout the 6 days of the course, I discovered a whole new relationship with my body.

My body literally woke up and spoke loud and clear about what it needs. 

It showed me things I had to deal with emotionally, mentally and physically, it literally demanded I do so making it clear that if I didn’t the consequence was intense pain. The whole experience was transformational. I made an enormous step towards healing myself of traumatic experiences of the past and letting go of so many things I did not need. And of course learning to listen to my body and my whole self .

How did you start practicing Craniosacral Biodynamic Therapy?

After completing the Integrated Craniosacral Biodynamics 1 course with Rosemary Wallace, I was so fascinated with this method and I started practicing a lot on friends and on myself. I gave many free sessions.  It was incredible to see that people were responding and that I was already getting quite impressive results. The biggest one was maybe the third person I practiced on who had a long term issue with his jaw, causing him lots of pain when he ate or talked, and during our second session he opened his eyes and said “My jaw just moved, I can comfortably close my mouth.” We were both super amazed for I had not touched his jaw, I had not moved anything in his body, the whole system had just relaxed and the right conditions had been created for the structure to shift to a better place, thus correcting itself.

From that moment on I had no doubts that this method really works!

I would talk more about it and would integrate it in my already existing massage practice. About a year later while I was in Australia working to save money, I was looking through the schedule in Rosemary’s website again for I wanted to continue studying with her and saw that she was looking for a new assistant. Without a doubt I applied for the position even though I was in fact underqualified for the position and thought I had little chances. I was miraculously accepted and a new chapter of my life began where to this day I study with Rosemary and work as a teaching assistant in her workshops.  The study and practice of Craniosacral Biodynamics has become an integral part of my life.

For you, what is Craniosacral Biodynamic Therapy?

Craniosacral Biodynamic Therapy is listening to the whole system of a being. It is being next to a being with full awareness and free from prejudice or bias, being there to listen, to reflect and to support whatever they are and whatever process is happening for them.

It is being there with no plan, no agenda, and no wish to fix or change.

It is creating a safe environment for change to happen from the inside, allowing body intelligence to perform its natural function. Through very light touch we listen to the fluid flows, to movement of tissue, to pulses and vibrations in the body.

We bring awareness to what is happening in the physical body.

We look first and foremost for health and if health is impeded to what is standing in the way. In Craniosacral Biodynamic Therapy the key word is bio-dynamic, which means life force, the force inside a living being that has the potential for change. We are looking for potential and allowing it to manifest.

For you, who is a Craniosacral Biodynamics practitioner?

A craniosacral biodynamic practitioner is someone who is free from prejudice and bias, someone who can be a mirror to reflect another human being, to allow another being to see themselves. A craniosacral biodynamic practitioner is someone who holds no strong ego and who is not looking for an end result, who does not want to fix or change something in their client, but is just there to support and facilitate another person’s process. A craniosacral practitioner is someone who can listen very deeply, and also someone who has developed the skill to listen through touch to subtle events in the physical body. It is someone who has a strong connection to life force and the ability to allow potentials to manifest.

What is your professional practice?

I now earn my living by being a Craniosacral Biodynamic Therapy practitioner, a teacher assistant in Integrated Craniosacral Biodynamic workshops and a yoga teacher.

What is your practice for your own optimal well-being?

I perform craniosacral biodynamic work on myself pretty much every day. I regularly take time out and listen to my body and my whole being, allowing things to settle and adjust after any kind of stress. I am mindful of my nutrition, and I move my body a lot. Yoga is one practice, but just free movement, dance, walking, running, skipping, swimming, climbing trees or anything really that I feel the body wants to do. I spend a lot of time in nature and I connect with all living things. I allow myself to make sounds, create music and I connect a lot to sounds and vibrations.  I hold a playful attitude in life and I laugh a lot.  And I never stay long in places and situations that cause me distress.

A message, piece of advice about healing for the people who read this blog?

Healing only comes from the inside, and it is always waiting to happen. We can look to the outside for support but it is me that really has to do the work. The question is do I really want to transition towards health and am I ready to leave behind the things that are getting in the way?

Taking time out to listen and allow is the key.

The physical body is one with the emotional and mental, you can’t have one without the other and they affect each other. Any event, any experience will leave its trace in the body. I have found that while my mind can go in all kinds of trips, the body is much more reliable to listen to, and by allowing it to speak and following the messages it gives me, I can address issues that stand in the way of my well-being much more effectively. Being in the physical body or else being aware of what is happening in the physical body is the biggest advice I can give.
